What will be included in the talk...
From the late 18th century onwards, the popularity of the Methodist movement in this area led to many new chapels being built in Hull and district, adding to the architectural mix of public buildings. The religious beliefs of this and other denominations led to various new ways of educational provision and to charitable work to tackle social problems such as alcohol abuse and poverty. This was often supported by some of Hull's leading businessmen. The nonconformist tradition of mixed adult choirs (as opposed to the Church of England's traditional all-male church choirs) produced singers for numerous secular mixed choirs in Hull and district.
John Scotney's talk illustrates some of these developments, from the late 18th to the 21st century.
