Commercial radio stations in the UK are licensed and regulated by Ofcom.
Analogue (that’s AM or FM) commercial radio licensees have obligations to provide local news and information on their radio stations.
The requirements in this area are changing as result of the implementation of the Media Act 2024.

Local news must be broadcast on the Licensed Service at least hourly between 06.00 to 19.00 (inclusive) on weekdays and on at least three suitably spaced occasions between 07.00 to 12.00 on weekends.
There is a requirement to provide locally gathered news.

Local news is ordinarily broadcast weekdays from 06.00 to 19.00 inclusive.
At weekends, local news is broadcast between 0900 and 1200 inclusive.
Typically, a weekend service also operates on bank holidays.
In addition, you may hear National news bulletins at other times, including weekends at 0700 and 0800.
Details of the arrangements that the Licensee has in place for ensuring that its broadcasting of local news consists of or includes news which is locally gathered
We have a commercial agreement with Bauer Radio Limited to supply news bulletins broadcast on this station.
Bauer Radio Limited operate their own licensed radio stations and directly engage journalists who can generate locally gathered news relevant to the relevant local multiplex stated and include this news within bulletins.
We also benefit from a commercial agreement with Independent Radio News who provide national and international news and other local information, and on occasion may include news gathered from the relevant area. This service from Sky News is supplied as a script and audio feed.
In addition, Nation participates in the BBC Local Democracy Reporting Service which has journalists embedded with media companies across the UK. News from this source may also be included in some bulletins.
Nation has access to its own team of employees and presenters who may be dispatched, if required, to cover a major story within the area.

Locally relevant weather bulletins are broadcast immediately after each local news bulletin, weekdays from 06.00 to 19.00 inclusive, weekends from 0900 to 1200 inclusive with a weekend service also operates on bank holidays.
Travel news is broadcast at least twice per hour on weekdays between 0600-0900 and between 1630-1900.
Within presentation output, we regularly broadcast details of relevant local events submitted by listeners to the station website and from other sources – although we do not formally track the frequency of this type of output.
